GPOY, lol
That actually almost killed the whole game for me, tbh. My first Warden was an f!Cousland romancing Alistair, and I got to the point where she accepted Loghain’s surrender and Alistair objected, and suddenly realized that my choices for this noble character who lived and died by her honor were to either murder the man—another noble—whose surrender she had just accepted, or watch the love of her life storm away in a fit of pique. I was pissed. End result was that she executed Loghain and hated herself for it, and I walked her straight into the Archdemon’s mouth just to spite good ol’ Alibear. And then I put the game down for several months, and when I finally, reluctantly came back to it I never romanced him again. True story.
Alistair’s problem, and I think this is very much Alistair’s problem, is that he thinks of the Grey Wardens as the beautiful, happy family he never got to have. And they’re really, really not. They’re a collection of good men and bad, criminals and blood mages along with nobles and the wrongfully accused. The important thing is that they’re the best at what they do—magic, fighting, sneaking, whatever—and Teryn Loghain has arguably the best tactical mind in all of Ferelden. That’s something that might be just a teensy bit important, right before you go to war.
Alistair refuses to stand beside Loghain and call him “brother.” Fine. No one’s asking you to, sweet-tits. That doesn’t change the fact that together we’re a naive princess and a spoiled brat, facing down a army of monsters because you were too proud to accept the help of a military genius. Either the Wardens use every means available to them against the Blight, or they don’t, and since apparently they don’t, people are going to fucking die.
So yes, Alistair is a selfish bastard. I understand why he feels that way, but I’ve got a hefty dose of contempt for him for not getting the fuck over it.
…And apparently I have a few too many feels on this issue.
